Full-service Restaurants Look to Bounce Back and Establish New Growth Strategies for Future Success

The full-service segment—and casual dining in particular—has faced numerous challenges over the past several years, but cautious optimism is emerging as some turnaround efforts gain traction. Restaurant Sales Continue To Improve As Guests Visit Less But Spend More

Same-store sales growth on a two-year basis was 1.1 percent during October according to TDn2K’s Black Box Intelligence™ data, based on weekly sales from over 30,000+ locations representing 170+ brands and nearly $71 billion in annual sales.

Headlines continue to be encouraging for the industry, as chain restaurants posted their fifth consecutive month of positive same-store sales growth during October. This month’s sales growth rate of 0.8 percent does represent a slowdown from the 1.2 percent reported for September and the 1.8 percent for August, but there was a promising sign in October’s results. Same-store sales growth on a two-year basis was 1.1 percent during October. As a comparison, two-year sales growth rates averaged -0.9 percent for the previous six months. IHOP Launches Special Holiday Menu with Green Grinch Pancakes and a Kids Eat Free Deal

IHOP isn’t wasting any time in spreading Christmas cheer.

The chain announced a kids eat free deal and a special holiday menu inspired by Illumination Entertainment's and Universal Pictures' new film, "Dr. Seuss' The Grinch," which debuts in theaters Nov. 9.

The menu, available now through Dec. 31, includes Grinch's Green Pancakes, Minty Who Hot Chocolate and Whoville Holiday Cheesecake French Toast.

"The holidays are such a special time for families and creating a delicious menu that reflects the fun and whimsy of Whoville in Dr. Seuss' beloved story about the Grinch is the perfect way for us at IHOP to celebrate the season," Alisa Gmelich, IHOP vice president of marketing, said in a statement.

The holiday classic tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl's generous holiday spirit.

Chains Ramp Up Efforts To Create Healthy Kids’ Meals

Families have always enjoyed dining out together at restaurants, and now they’re looking to operators to provide them with more balanced dining choices. To meet that request, chefs and restaurateurs are ramping up efforts to create more better-for-you, great-tasting foods they all will love.

“Many restaurants are working to update their menus so kids are satisfied with the choices available to them," says Jeff Clark, the National Restaurant Association’s director of sustainability and nutrition.
