PAHO - Joint Declaration Reinforces Commitment to the One Health Approach in the Americas
Every July 6, the international community marks World Zoonoses Day to raise awareness about the risk of disease transmission between animals and humans and to promote measures to prevent zoonotic diseases.
Approximately 60% of known human infectious diseases are zoonotic in origin, while nearly 75% of emerging infectious diseases in humans originate from domestic or wild animals.
In addition, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is estimated to cause 1.27 million direct deaths each year worldwide and is associated with nearly 5 million deaths annually. Foodborne diseases are...
Avian Influenza Cases Fall in the EU During the Spring
Detections of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) declined in Europe during the spring of 2026 and are expected to remain low over the summer, according to the latest quarterly monitoring report by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), and the EU reference laboratory (EURL). The risk to the general public remains low.
Between 28 February and 4 June 2026, EU Member States reported 186 outbreaks in poultry and captive birds, as well as 763 detections in wild birds. While the number...
Avian Flu Confirmed at Live Bird Market in Providence
Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) and Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) want to alert consumers that birds at Antonelli Poultry in Providence tested positive for the H5N1 strain of avian influenza during routine quarterly testing by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). The infected birds, which included live chickens and ducks, did not come from Rhode Island farms. They were from out-of-state dealers.
Earlier today (June 13), the State Veterinarian oversaw the USDA-required humane euthanasia of about 445 asymptomatic birds at the market to prevent the spread of the disease to other birds. Per USDA regulations, Antonelli Poultry will be closed until...
FAO Calls for Stronger Prevention and Global Action as Transboundary Animal Diseases Spread
Countries around the world are facing a growing threat from transboundary animal diseases (TADs), including New World Screwworm, African Swine Fever, Avian Influenza, Foot-and-Mouth Disease, and Peste des Petits Ruminants, as well as other emerging zoonotic threats such as Andes hantavirus, Ebola, and Nipah. As diseases and pests move more rapidly across borders, countries are facing increasing pressure to strengthen prevention, preparedness and response systems.
The stakes are high. Livestock sectors support more than one billion livelihoods and contribute trillions of dollars in economic value each year. Protecting animal health is therefore critical not...
Texas Confirms First HPAI Case of 2026 in Dairy Cattle, Farm Quarantined
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed at a Texas dairy farm, marking the state's first reported case in dairy cattle this year, according to Texas animal health officials.
The case was identified after cattle exhibited clinical signs, including illness and reduced milk production. Samples were confirmed by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory on May 30, 2026.
The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) said it is conducting epidemiological investigations to determine the source and extent of the infection. The affected dairy has been placed under quarantine, while state and federal officials work to contain the virus and prevent further spread.
US CDC and Indonesian Government Strengthen Avian Influenza Preparedness
Palembang, Indonesia — The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), through its implementor Health Security Partners, concluded a four-day tabletop exercise and field training this week aimed at strengthening District and Provincial Rapid Response Teams in South Sumatra Province. The exercise, held April 7-10 in Palembang, brought together the CDC and key Indonesian government agencies to enhance bilateral preparedness against avian influenza and other emerging infectious disease threats.
The collaborative exercise was coordinated with Indonesia’s Ministry of Health (MOH), Ministry of Agriculture (MOA), Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs, and Natural Resources Conservation Agency, demonstrating the whole...
USPOULTRY and Foundation Approve More Than $570,000 in New Research Grants
USPOULTRY and the USPOULTRY Foundation have approved more than $570,000 in funding for seven new research grants at institutions across the country through the Comprehensive Research Program. The funding was authorized by the boards of both organizations following recommendations from the Foundation Research Advisory Committee (FRAC), a group of industry experts who evaluate proposals based on their potential to deliver meaningful impact. Representing a wide range of scientific disciplines and industry sectors, the FRAC plays a critical role in ensuring research investments address the most relevant challenges...
UK: Preparing to Let Birds Outside Again From Thursday 9 April 2026
Mandatory housing measures for poultry and other captive birds will be lifted in England and Wales from 00:01am on Thursday 9 April 2026.
As birds may have been housed for several months, there is a seven day notice period to give keepers time to prepare.
Keepers should follow the guidance on preparing to let birds outside again, including cleansing and disinfecting hard surfaces, fencing off ponds or standing water and reintroducing wild bird deterrents.
Birds must still be housed if you are in a protection zone or...
UK: Avian Influenza Housing Measures Lifted
Mandatory housing measures for poultry and flocks of more than 50 captive birds will be lifted from Thursday 9 April in England and Wales, the Deputy Chief Veterinary Officer has confirmed today.
The measures were introduced across the whole of England on 6 November last year to prevent the spread of bird flu. The latest risk assessment supported by the best epidemiological and scientific evidence shows that the risk of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) levels in wild birds and poultry has reduced.
This means poultry and other captive birds will no longer need to be housed and can now be kept outside. The Avian...
MDARD Urges Animal Owners to Continue Taking Steps to Prevent HPAI as Wild Birds Migrate this Spring
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) urges animal owners to remain vigilant and take preventative measures against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) as wild birds complete their spring migration.
“When wild birds move, so does HPAI. Even though there were only three cases of HPAI detected so far this year, the spring migration season brings an increased risk for transmission of the virus,” said State Veterinarian Nora Wineland, DVM, MS, DACVPM. “This virus thrives in the cool damp conditions that are common as spring arrives...
Seek Labs Awarded $2 Million Federal Grant for a Novel CRISPR-Based Therapeutic to Combat Avian Flu
Seek Labs, a private TechBio company building a programmable disease response platform to detect, protect, and counter disease threats, has been awarded $2 million from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) to develop a novel, mutation-resistant therapeutic for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) using the company’s proprietary Programmable Target Ablation Platform (PTAP). The award is part of a broader federal push aimed at combating avian influenza, which has led to poultry production disruption, higher egg and poultry prices, and strained food supply...
The Retail Rundown: Cheaper Turkeys Hit Shelves Despite Wholesale Price Surge
This Thanksgiving, holiday shoppers might spot some relief: retail turkey prices have eased, even as wholesale values climb toward near-record highs.
Ongoing challenges, such as persistent bird flu outbreaks and relatively low hatch rates, have limited production all year, leaving supplies exceptionally thin ahead of the holiday.
While retailers secure turkeys well in advance to build cold-storage inventories, frozen whole-bird stocks in 2025 remain near seasonal record lows, leaving little supply cushion...
ANALYSIS: EU Egg Product Market Faces Historic Highs Amid Tight Supply and Bird Flu Fears
As of mid-October 2025, the EU egg product market is under severe strain, with prices for dried whole egg, liquid, and dried yolk hitting record highs. A year of elevated shell egg costs, limited supply, and minimal inventory buildup has left the market exposed just as demand surges for the peak consumption season.
Unlike in previous years, the usual summer lull failed to ease prices, so September’s demand rebound only intensified pressure. Processors now face shrinking availability and soaring costs, particularly for...
