ANALYSIS: US Cage-Free Values Rise as Spot Availability Tightens
US cage-free market values have risen considerably over the past week, following the prolonged weakness that persisted through much of the early spring period. While cage-free inventories continue to outpace both last year’s levels as well as the five-year average, a combination of ongoing flock reductions, active export movement, and modest improvement in retail ordering patterns resulted in a 10.3% week-over-week decline in stocks according to the latest USDA inventory report. As inventories tightened, open market offerings dried up, particularly for larger sizes due to older flocks being removed from production. In turn, both...
ANALYSIS: USDA Inventory Data Signals Easing Supply Pressure in US Egg Market
The USDA's latest National Weekly Shell Egg Inventory report reflected one of the first notable shifts in supply conditions the market has seen in months. Total shell egg holdings fell to 1.78 million cases for the week ending May 11, down 138,400 cases — or 7.2% — from the prior week, slipping below the five-year average for the corresponding week for the first time this year.
That decline brought overall holdings nominally below the five-year average of 1.79 million cases — a meaningful departure from the elevated supply conditions...
ANALYSIS: Cage-Free Wholesale Values Surge Amid Retail Strength and Bird Flu Caution
Cage-free wholesale values surged again this week as both retail strength and precautionary buying surrounding bird flu ahead of the peak baking demand period help to sustain momentum. Buyer activity along the West Coast intensified noticeably, giving the market its most active tone in months.
Demand along the West Coast has held firm as competitive shelf prices and consistent promotional activity continue to support consumer engagement. Several large-scale chains in the Golden State have maintained prices near $1.50/dozen for cage-free eggs...
ANALYSIS: US Cage-Free Market Begins to Ascend
Since mid-July, the cage-free market has been on a steady decline, interrupted only by brief periods of stability. However, with renewed demand for eggs across the US as we enter Q4—and a healthy level of concern surrounding the growing prevalence of HPAI—market values have begun to push upward.
Retail demand over the past few weeks has been generally average, but when multiple major chains reduced shelf prices to around the $2.50/dozen level or lower while some chains in other segments launched new promotional activity, consumers responded positively. This improvement coincides with cooler weather spurring baking interest, as well as elevated competing protein prices that continue to make eggs an attractive value...
