Japan's Food Self-Sufficiency Stuck at 38% in FY24/25, Below 2030 Goal
Japan's food self-sufficiency ratio remained at 38% in the 2024/25 fiscal year ended March 31, unchanged from a year earlier and below the government's 2030 target of 45%, the agriculture ministry said on Friday.
The figure -- one of the lowest among developed economies -- underscores Japan's vulnerability to food security risks at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, global fragmentation and increasingly unstable weather.
