ANALYSIS: A Widening Price Gap Between GB and Irish Cattle Prices
Difficult grazing conditions due to heatwave and low rainfall have been adding to the longer-term contraction in Irish cattle supplies. This is reflected in slaughter volumes. In 2026 to date, up to the week ending August 24, prime cattle slaughter in Ireland totalled 802,000 head according to some industry reports. This was 4% below the same period last year and well below the five-year average. Despite low cattle supplies Irish cattle prices have been trending downwards since the start of 2026.
