President Trump's decision to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods -- among the highest for any country -- has set back U.S.-India relations and raised questions about New Delhi's economic trajectory. It also underscores a central fact about the world's fifth-largest economy: India's large population of poor farmers hinders its capacity to reach mutually beneficial trade deals.
