The Advantages of Crossbred Dairy Cows
Willy Bokma and his family have a large dairy south of Twin Falls, Idaho. The cows are Holsteins, Jerseys and crossbreds. The crossbred and composite cows (part Holstein, part Jersey) are bred for milk with higher butterfat. The Jersey adds more butterfat tests, especially during summer months when the Holsteins have more volume and less butterfat.
Every dairy is also in the beef business when selling cull cows, and the price of beef has been a lot higher in the past few years. Holsteins, with their large body mass, provide a lot of hamburger when the older cows are no longer productive.
The Jersey cows are not worth as much for beef when culled, but are very beneficial while they are in the dairy. The crossbred animal is a plus for milk quality...
