This Week in Retail: Tight Supplies, Stellar Protein Demand; A Case of Déjà Vu?
August is flying by and retail ads are beginning to shift from grilling staples to tailgating must-haves as retailers highlight NFL preseason. Consumer demand for beef, pork, and chicken has remained stellar leading up to the fall, and tight supplies across most protein items may continue to keep retail prices elevated.
This week in retail we look at the situation surrounding the poultry and red meat complex, which continues to be influenced by the pandemic and ongoing logistical challenges.
This time last year, retail prices were higher for many protein items amid efforts to reopen food service and dining capacity across the nation. The situation in August 2021 appears to be a case of déjà vu as retail prices, for beef and pork, in particular, trend higher than year-ago levels. The Delta variant is fueling volatility in the marketplace and re-emerging patterns of panic-buying are becoming increasingly likely.
