Next week marks the start of the Christian Lenten season—a period that has significant impact on consumer purchasing behavior at retail and foodservice.
The timing of Lent is determined by the date in which Easter falls. In 2019, Lent is falling three whole weeks later than it did last year. Lent begins as early as February 4th or as late as the 10th of March, making this year one of the latest dates possible. Easter lands on Sunday, April 21st this year.
This period of 40 days often structures the purchasing decisions of a potentially large group of Americans—in fact, roughly three quarters of the population identify as Christian.
