This Week in Retail: Outlook for January

It’s the start of a new year, and there is no shortage of potentially impactful elements to consider as we look ahead to 2019.

Consumer spending seems to have ended 2018 on a high note, with reports of strong job growth and wages helping to boost spending during the holiday season. Consumer sentiment, according to the University of Michigan, also rose in December and remains at record favorable levels. In fact, 2018 was the best year since 2000, says U of M.

Kicking off the year, however, we are still in a period of uncertainty regarding global trade and complications stemming from the U.S. government shutdown. Negotiations have progressed with China and the EU, which has helped boost stock market sentiment in recent days, though final outcomes are still unknown.
