This week in retail, we take a look at the situation surrounding our feathered friends and what price action has been year-to-date.
Urner Barry’s Weekly Retail Feature Chicken Index is $2.80 per pound this week. This compares to the 3-year average of $2.68 per pound and is therefore at a 4 percent premium. If we look at the 5-year average, the current index is up 9 percent.
Chicken currently ranks third in protein buying opportunities with 18 percent, behind second-place beef and first-place seafood with 26 and 30 percent, respectively. Within the chicken feature category, boneless skinless breasts win out, claiming 37 percent of ad volume. The next highest featured item is drumsticks and thighs, each holding onto 10 percent of total chicken ads.
