This Week in Retail: That’s Right, It’s Labor Day Weekend
Seriously. Where did August go?
Somehow, in the blink of an eye, summer has come and gone and Labor Day weekend is here. The final big grilling weekend of the season (fear not, much grilling to be done for football and other fall activities) has the meat case fully stocked and consumers taking advantage of prime deals on protein.
This week, beef and seafood are neck and neck, each claiming just over 24 percent of total protein feature volume (beef technically wins by 0.2 percentage points). Claiming the third spot is pork with 22 percent of ad space, followed by chicken just shy of 21 percent.
Average feature prices for ground beef are actually above year ago levels this week at $3.44 per pound—that’s up nearly 9 percent over Labor Day weekend 2018. Features run as low as $2.04 on average in some regions and as high as...
