Proposition 12 Passes in California, Cage-Free Eggs Now Law
California’s Proposition 12 passed yesterday, meaning that eggs produced or traveling into the state will have to comply by new rules over the next few years.
Egg-laying hens will have at least 1 square foot of usable floor space by the end of 2019 and will need to be in cage-free systems the start of 2022. The new regulations cover both shell eggs and egg products, slightly different than Prop. 2, which restricted only shell eggs.
This could be a jumping off point for the cage-free movement overall, especially since so many retailers, foodservice chains, and institutions made commitments to be all cage-free nationally by 2025.
