This Week in Retail: Outlook for August
The dog days of summer are upon us. The month of August at retail brings a unique set of circumstances that affect the way grocers market and manage the meat case. This week in retail, we examine the underlying factors that impact the retail meat landscape this month.
Currently, wholesale beef prices are nearly steady with a year ago, though had trended at a notable discount to 2017 levels from May to about mid-July. Seasonally, the wholesale Choice beef cutout has fallen an average of 4 percent during the month of August when we look at the 3-year average. The seasonal downtrend typically starts in June and declines into September. This is a result of high production levels that occur during the summer months. In fact, the month of August has been the top beef production month of the year for the past two consecutive years. Monthly cattle slaughter figures in August 2017 hit an impressive 5-year high.
