This Week in Retail: Prepping for the Third Leg of Summer Grilling Occasions
Grilling holidays in the early part of the summer are kind of like the Triple Crown of the protein industry—we have Memorial Day (aka the “Derby”) followed by Father’s Day (aka the “Preakness”) rounded out by Independence Day (aka the “Belmont”). Only a few weeks stand between the three big events, and much like the trainers and jockeys, grocers and suppliers spend a lot of time preparing for each occasion.
The Fourth of July is the last big hoorah of the retail beef complex, marking the last prime summertime buying occasion until Labor Day. While grilling season continues all summer long, the dog days are absent of significant retail purchasing events to boost sales. This is also at a time when supplies seasonally expand and prices retreat. So grocers are forced to find other ways to move inventory, often through marketing initiatives and attractive feature prices.
