This Week in Retail: Briskets & Beer

This week in retail, Americans—regardless of ancestry—honor Irish heritage and celebrate through food and drink(s). Most likely the plural form of the latter.

In addition to barbeque and, more recently, foodservice demand, March is the time of year when we see an uptick in demand for brisket. Briskets are used in corned beef applications, and there is seldom a St. Paddy’s day celebration sans corned beef and cabbage.  

This week, the roast segment jumped up to 38.7 percent ownership of beef category features, compared to 22.5 percent just two weeks ago. Of the roasts on feature, briskets make up a whopping 62.4 percent. To compare, the next highest roast item is boneless chuck roasts with 11.8 percent.

Brisket ad prices are up slightly on average this year, at $3.55 per pound. This compares to St. Paddy’s day a year ago at $3.36 per pound. It is still, however, one of the...
